Is today really “Blue Monday?”
Today marks what is commonly referred to as “Blue Monday,” often dubbed “the most depressing day of the year.” This term originated in 2005, when a travel company commissioned a psychologist to identify the most depressing day of the year, for their marketing to promote Winter holidays. For some, it’s just another Monday, but for others, the label of Blue Monday can feel like a heavy weight, amplifying feelings of negativity and sadness.
But do we truly believe in the concept of Blue Monday? Or is it simply a narrative that has shaped how we perceive this day, and perhaps, even our emotions? After all, there is no scientific evidence supporting the idea that January 20th is any more depressing than any other day. In fact, many critics argue that the entire concept of Blue Monday – and similar “visibility days” focused on negative emotions – risk trivialising serious mental health issues.
